Job Description

Job Title: Fire Alarm Technician

A Fire Alarm Technician is responsible for the installation, programming, maintenance, and repair of fire alarm systems in commercial and residential buildings. This role ensures that fire alarm systems function correctly and comply with all relevant codes and standards. The technician will collaborate with other fire protection professionals to safeguard property and lives.

Key Responsibilities:

- Installation:
- Install fire alarm systems, including control panels, detectors, and alarms.
- Run wiring and conduit for fire alarm systems, ensuring correct connections and configurations.

- Maintenance and Testing:
- Perform routine maintenance and inspections of fire alarm systems.
- Test alarms, detectors, and other system components to ensure proper functionality.
- Replace or repair defective parts and devices.

- Troubleshooting and Repair:
- Diagnose issues with fire alarm systems using testing equipment and technical manuals.
- Repair or replace malfunctioning components, restoring systems to full operational status promptly.

- Compliance and Documentation:
- Ensure all work complies with NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) codes, local building codes, and safety regulations.
- Maintain accurate records of inspections, tests, repairs, and installations.
- Provide detailed reports on system status and any issues found.

- Customer Interaction:
- Communicate with clients to explain system functions and maintenance requirements.
- Provide training to building occupants on the use and maintenance of fire alarm systems.
- Address client concerns and provide technical support as needed.

- Emergency Response:
- Respond to emergency service calls for fire alarm systems.
- Perform urgent repairs and ensure systems are fully operational.
- Collaborate with fire departments and other emergency services when necessary.

- Collaboration:
- Work with other team members on larger projects, including system design and installation.
- Maintain a safe and clean work environment, following all safety protocols and guidelines.

Desired Candidate Profile:

- Technical Knowledge:
- Strong understanding of fire alarm systems, including various types of detectors, control panels, and alarm devices.
- Familiarity with electrical systems and wiring.

- Practical Skills:
- Hands-on experience with the installation and maintenance of fire alarm systems.
- Proficiency in using tools and equipment necessary for the job (e.g., multimeters, hand tools, ladders).

- Code and Standard Compliance:
- Knowledge of NFPA standards, local building codes, and fire safety regulations.
- Ability to interpret and apply these codes in the installation and maintenance of systems.

- Problem-Solving:
- Strong troubleshooting skills to diagnose and resolve issues with fire alarm systems.
- Ability to think critically and provide effective solutions under pressure.

- Communication Skills:
- Good verbal and written communication skills for interacting with clients and documenting work.
- Ability to explain technical information clearly to non-technical individuals.

- Attention to Detail:
- Precision in performing installations and repairs to ensure system reliability.
- Thoroughness in conducting tests and inspections.

- Education and Certifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Technical training or associate degree in electronics, fire science, or a related field.
- Certifications such as NICET (National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies) Level I or II in Fire Alarm Systems are highly desirable.
- Completion of manufacturer-specific training programs for fire alarm systems.
